Case Study: Gilberto Ruiz Moreno

Gilberto Ruiz Moreno, Farmer, Mexico

Knowledge from abroad: improving the live of both the milk farmer and of his cows: Gilberto Ruiz Moreno inherited his small property "El Rincón" from his father. His farm is located in in Chiapas, one of the poorest provinces of Mexico.

In 1977, he started selling milk to an international food company (40kg per day). Numerous efforts – helped by agricultural advisors of his new customer – were undertaken to improve the quantity and quality of milk produced. Today, he is selling the company 144 kg of milk per day.

Some of the many measures taken to improve productivity were quite simple, but effective, such as sunroofs to protect cows from the midday sun. The company's agricultural advisors had learnt about this relative simple measure when working with farmers in Brazil. Initially, Gilberto did not like the idea: "My cows are no princesses".

He now agrees that a cow feeling well gives more and better milk.
